Battle of Gallipoli

25th April 1915 – 9th January 1916

GALLIPOLI- AN OVERVIEW

The Russians demanded it! The French lobbied for it! Churchill was convinced of it!

So was the necessity to force open the Dardanelle straits in order to give Russia a supply

route via the Baltic Sea.

Following the decision by German military advisors stationed in the Dardanelles to close the Dardanelle straits in October 1914 plans were put in place for a naval attack on the Dardanelles. The combined Anglo-Franco naval task force was unable to force a secure passage through the straits, so it was seen as appropriate to put boots on the ground to do the job.

The task of the first ever amphibious assault in modern times was given to General Sir Ian Hamilton.
